Streetlight Replacement Program
Baxter & Woodman is designing lighting improvements along Milwaukee Avenue (Illinois Route 21) from Albion Avenue to Greenwood Avenue for the Village of Niles. The design includes removal of existing lighting and design of a new street lighting system with LED fixtures. The improvements include use of a compatible wireless adaptive control and management system for the lighting system which also required extensive utility coordination with utilities along the street edge and in the bordering areas. Preliminary estimates for this six miles of street lighting are in the range of $6.5 million.
Design considerations include:
- Roadway and pedestrian use classifications throughout the project area
- Design lighting levels
- Driver/pedestrian safety
- Comprehensive field walks to determine potential design and construction conflicts
The work is also taking into account proposed bus shelter locations that are part of a separate PACE suburban bus project.
