Walkup Road Improvement Project

The McHenry County Division of Transportation is committed to promoting new resources to keep the public informed and aware. They embrace social media platforms, and work collaboratively with owners and economic development staff in communities to communicate construction information and keep disruption to a minimum.  Recently, the McHenry County Division of Transportation successfully utilized several online communication tools for their Walkup Road Improvement Project. The improvement project provided much needed relief to a heavily-used intersection and improved mobility and safety for pedestrians and bicyclists along Walkup Road. Keeping residents, business owners, commuters, and other stakeholders informed of the construction project schedule, current status, road closures, and construction delays was critical for a successful project.MCCDHWALKUP1

With so many people (residents, businesses, refuse haulers, mail carriers, school bus drivers, etc.) affected by the 18-month construction, the County wanted a comprehensive plan to share information and more importantly, an effective way for people to ask questions.  In order to keep the many local residents and businesses affected by the Walkup Road construction informed, the County partnered with Baxter & Woodman, who served as the Resident Construction Engineer on the project, to develop an effective public relations program.

Public outreach for the Walkup Road Improvement utilized traditional communication methods such as construction information meetings and changeable message signage, but also relied heavily upon online communication methods including:

  • a project website
  • a Facebook page
  • a Twitter account
  • Weekly Project Update Emails

Thank you for all your excellent email updates on the Walkup Road Project. I work off Terra Cotta and found this information so helpful. The flow of the traffic has gone exceptionally well considering the amount of construction that is taking place.
